Philip Jeck trained as a visual artist but began exploring composition using turntables, old and new, in the early eighties. He has created live and recorded soundtracks for dance and theatre companies (Laurie Booth, Steve Paxton) as well as solo concerts and work with other musicians (Einstuerzende Neubauten, NVA). 'Vinyl Requiem' in collaboration with Lol Sargent (a performance marking the change from vinyl to compact disc, analog to digital, using 180 fifties and sixties record-players and 12 slide, 2 movie projectors), has been his most ambitious and successful work to date. He wishes to continue using an 'orchestra' of record players for the Belluard concert but this time with another musician, violinist Sianed Jones. "From Glimmer To Gleam" takes 'dusk' as its sterling point, the change from natural light to electric light, and in sound terms, from acoustic to amplified, from quiet to loud to louder. Philip has worked with Sianed in a group called SLANT who have released a vinyl L.P 'Hive', a CD 'Sian!' and have recorded a new CD 'Canning Town Chronicles' for release this Summer. Sianed Jones is a Welsh Banshee of the distorted funk fiddle with a voice to die for! She played with the now legendary Kahondo Style. "The whole shebang works rather like acrobatic platebalancing, with a sea of old Dansettes stuck in different grooves, repeating themselves until one of the operators comes to the rescue of the needle. Il might have ended up sounding like a choir of cats in heat, but the result is an awesome an hypnotic work which will appeal to most people who seek more from their music than a verse, chorus and middle-eight. The complex aural experience has all the grace of a dossical work with the power of indie experimentalism at its best - a bit like My Bloody Valentine on Valium.". (Time Out)
